Welcome to Grow Tomatoes 101
It is nice to see you here. I have a passion for gardening. Some would call it an obsession. I would like to share that obsession with you, the beginning gardener and experienced gardener alike.
There are so many topics we can cover about growing tomatoes. And I may even sneak in a few articles about eating tomatoes as well. That is why we grow them in the first place. Right?
Take a look around our little site. Be sure to click on the tab named SITE MAP. It is located just below the pictures at the top of our page. There you will find an easy to navigate list of all our articles at Grow Tomatoes 101.
Some of the topics I will be covering in the coming weeks include:
Tomato Varieties – There are tomatoes that are more juicy, less acidic, hardier in tougher climates and shorter or longer in their growing seasons. We will touch on the most popular varieties and some of the more obscure and their pros and cons.
Greenhouse Tomatoes – If you have a greenhouse or want one, we will explore the possibilities. A greenhouse is not necessarily a large structure. Nor is it necessarily expensive.
Growing Tomatoes from Seeds and Seedlings – Which is better, the seed or the seedling? Well there are a number of considerations including where you are in the growing season when you start your garden, how much experience you have gardening and how much you want to hedge your bets towards getting healthy/hardy plants in the easiest possible way.
Heirloom Tomatoes – Ah heirloom tomatoes. Just the name conjures images of country fair judges and pedigrees. But what is an heirloom or heritage tomato really? And do you want one for your garden? We’ll talk about the ayes and nays of it all.
Growing Tomatoes Upside Down – On Your Patio – and Even in Your House – It isn’t enough to just throw some seeds in the ground and hope for the best. Oh no, we are much more creative than that. There is really no reason you can’t have fresh, home grown tomatoes no matter where you happen to live.
Hydroponics and Organic Tomatoes – From opposite ends of the spectrum, science and tradition. You really can grow tomatoes in water. It is a fun and consuming hobby, be warned. And you want organic for your family but the cost is prohibitive? You can grow your own organic tomatoes with a little dedication.
Tomato Problems – Pests and Diseases – Growing tomatoes is easy. Really it is. But there are some pitfalls that may trip you up along the way. We will talk about them and their solutions.
When to Plant Tomatoes – One of the most heartbreaking mistakes beginners make is putting in their tomatoes at the wrong time. We will talk about what is the right time for your region and how to prepare your seeds and seedlings for the big event in the garden.
How to Tend Your Tomatoes – Yes, you will have to tend them. It will be easy, fast and fun. And so worth the work. A little tomato TLC will ensure a bumper crop.

And of course the ever popular – Harvesting Tomatoes – Speaking of bumper crops, with any luck you will have more tomatoes than you know what to do with. We will tell you what to do with them. Nothing will go to waste and you will pick your plump, ripe, juicy tomatoes at their peak flavor and freshness.
This is just a sampling of the information you will find by clicking on our site map.
