It has been an unseasonably warm winter in many parts of the US and farmer’s crops are producing yields up to a month ahead of time. If you are a fan of fresh produce and farmer’s markets, you are going to love this year.

Keep an eye out for your local markets opening early. And larger grocery chains who buy locally should have a bounty of fresh goodies already.

Also, be sure to watch for individual road side stands if you travel rural roads at all. Even restaurants will likely feature an early fresh selection of fruits and veggies.

The benefits of local produce will be multiplied this year as prices drop and demand grows. Nothing beats fresh produce and it looks like it will be available to enjoy for many months to come.

Local produce sales and consumption also mean a smaller environmental footprint by saving fuel and transportation impact. And it keeps the money in the local community.

It is important to note that the average backyard hobbyist should not be too optimistic about putting in a garden yet. Many areas are not out of the danger of frost. Give it a few more weeks before putting all your plants in the ground.

Much of what you will see on the market for consumption in the next few weeks will have come from large greenhouses. A luxury the hobbyist usually doesn’t have.

Enjoy the fresh. It is going to be a great year. And if you are so inclined, you can get a jump on that canning , too.
